44.1 kHz vs. 48 kHz: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Both 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz capture the entire range of human hearing, so for listening purposes there is no practical quality difference between them. Under the Nyquist sampling theorem, laid out in the Stanford CCRMA sampling chapter, each rate can represent frequencies up to half its value — 22.05 kHz and 24 kHz respectively — while human hearing tops out around 20 kHz, per the National Park Service acoustics explainer. The real difference is lineage: 44.1 kHz is the Compact Disc rate, 48 kHz is the rate of video and film production.

Two rates, two histories

44.1 kHz is fixed in IEC 60908, the international standard for the Compact Disc Digital Audio system. The music-distribution world — CDs, most lossless download stores, most streaming masters — grew up around it. 48 kHz became the standard rate for audio attached to picture: broadcast, film, and video workflows settled on it, and it remains the default in those chains today. Is one better?

Not audibly, for delivery. Both rates clear the audible band with margin; the extra 1.95 kHz of theoretical bandwidth at 48 kHz sits above the limit of human hearing. The Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement for audio accepts 44.1 kHz / 16-bit PCM or higher, which places both rates inside preservation-grade territory rather than ranking one above the other.

Where the choice matters is workflow, not fidelity:

  • Music destined for CD or CD-lineage stores is conveniently produced at 44.1 kHz, avoiding a sample-rate conversion at the end.
  • Audio destined for video belongs at 48 kHz, because that is what the surrounding toolchain expects.
  • Mixing rates mid-project forces sample-rate conversion. Modern converters do this cleanly, but the tidy practice is to pick the delivery rate at the start and stay there.

What 48 kHz does not change

Sample rate and bit depth are independent settings. Moving from 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz says nothing about dynamic range, loudness, or file quality in the sense most listeners mean; those are governed by bit depth, mastering, and the codec used. The definitions are separated cleanly in what 44.1 kHz and 16-bit actually mean. File size does change: bit rate scales linearly with sample rate, so 48 kHz audio is proportionally larger than 44.1 kHz audio at the same bit depth and channel count.

Where to look next

If the underlying question is "which one should my export be," the answer is the rate of the destination: 44.1 kHz for music-only delivery descended from CD, 48 kHz for anything attached to video. If the underlying question is "will I hear the difference," the sampling theorem answers it — both rates already exceed the requirement set by human hearing.
